Mobile Area WTT League Regulations

Local Rules are in addition to the Captains Scoring Guide on the back of scorecard per WTT. League Director will administer the enforcement of all rules.    Please contact League Directors, Mark Johnson at 232-4925 (majohnson@playwttl.com) and Ceil Johnson at 232-4924 if you have any questions or interpretations of the rules.

A team must have two men and two women, as a minimum, 10 players maximum.  Six players, 3 men and 3 women, is an optimum number.  Four levels of play are offered each season: 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5.  For a level to make, there must be a minimum of three teams.  Levels are determined as below:

  • The average NTRP rating of the TOP two men and TOP two women at the beginning of the league season or qualifying event on your team will be used to determine your team's level of competition. Example of top four players: 4.0 + 3.5 + 3.0 + 3.0 = 13.5. 13.5 divided by four players = 3.375. This team would register for the 3.5 & under division.
  • No team may carry a player more than one NTRP point above the National Qualifying division entered.

Determining Ratings of Players
NTRP ratings from the start of the local league are required for every player on the team roster for National play.

  • If at the start of the local league a player has a computer generated rating, that player will be allowed to compete at the National Qualifier with that rating.
  • If at the start of the local league a player does not have a computer generated rating:
    • And does not have a rating at the time of the National Qualifier, WTT will accept a self-rating. This self-rating is subject to the approval of the local league director, a completed player profile and the WTT National Office.
    • And at the time of the National Qualifier the player is using an accepted self-rating for USTA league play taking place in the same year as the National Qualifier, that player will compete at the National Qualifier with that self-rating.
    • And has started playing in USTA leagues either before, during or after WTT’s local league with an accepted self-rating and has that rating adjusted when the year end ratings are published (before the year of the National Qualifier), that player will be able to compete in the National Qualifier with their initial self-rating.
  • If a self-rated player has been disqualified at their current rating, prior to the National Qualifier, that player must compete at the National Qualifier at their adjusted rating.
  • If a self-rated player has had their rating adjusted after the National Qualifier and that player is attending the National Championships, the player will be allowed to play the National Championships with their National Qualifier rating.

Home teams are responsible for two cans of balls, one for each court.  The home team captain is responsible for reserving his or her courts for each match.  Court fees may apply at some locations.

1.      SCORECARDS -  Captains complete all information on score cards including date of play, division and both team names and Captains name, and all players, including first and last name,  and substituted players during the match.        Captains please verify accuracy of information prior to signing score card.   Incomplete score cards may be recorded as losses for the team if not complete.  Home Team Captains must call in or email total game scores to 232-4925, 232-4924, or majohnson@playwtt.com.  Home Team captains must send in completed scorecards by mail (1279 Skywood Drive, Mobile, AL  36693)  or fax to 251-602-6704.  Scorecards may also be scanned and emailed.

Captains may want to keep a copy of scorecard in case of questions from League Director.

2.      SCORING  Local league set scoring will consist of an eight game, no ad set.  Play a tiebreak at 7 all.

Defaults: Set default  8-0                                                       Match Default  48-0

Note:  A six game pro set is played at the National Qualifier Tournaments and National Championships.  This format may also be used on the local area and a tiebreak will be played at 5 all.

Defaults: Set default  6-0                                                                         Match Default  36-0

3.      MATCH:  A match will consist of six sets to include mens’ and womens’ doubles, mens’ and womens’ singles, and two sets of mixed doubles, to be played in this order, using two courts.  Singles may be played first if both captains agree.  The winner of the match will be determined by the total number of games won.  However, for purposes of determining whether a match will go into overtime, set number six will be the deciding factor.  Note: Players cannot play in both mixed doubles sets.

After both mixed doubles sets are finished and scores are recorded and totaled, the procedure is as follows:

A.       If the leading team won set number six, the match is over.

B.       If the trailing team won set number six, the match continues into overtime until the leading team wins one game or until the score is tied.  If a tie occurs, a Supertiebreaker will be played to determine the winner.

C.      If the overall score ends tied, a Supertiebreaker will be played to determine the winner.

Overtime is a continuation of the sixth set.   Team number six should be designated as the strongest mixed doubles team.  Once you have come out of the mixed doubles set, you cannot return in overtime.  The first person to serve in overtime is the person who was next to serve at the end of the sixth set.  This OVERTIME rule gives the trailing team a chance to make a comeback.  It also emphasizes the importance of the mixed doubles set  If the fifth set is not complete when the sixth is over, the sixth set players may have to wait to determine if they have to go into OVERTIME.

4.      SERVICE LETS have been included as official play in both singles and doubles matches. Similar to the WTT Professional League format, let serves will be considered fair play and either partner may return the serve in doubles after the ball bounces in service box.

SERVICE ORDER: The home team serves first in all doubles sets with exception to fifth set (mixed), the away team serves first and the home team serves first in the sixth set (mixed).  The away team serves first in the singles sets.  Note:  Since the serving order is predetermined, the receiving team selects from which end of the court they want to receive.   Note:  With no ad scoring the receiving team (in both doubles and singles) chooses which player receives the final serve for the game, with exception to the mixed sets, which gender to gender.

CHANGING ENDS: After every four games players change ends and receive a 90 second break. In the nine-point tiebreaker, change ends only after the first four points.  In the Supertiebreaker, change ends only after the first six points.

5.      WARM-UP:  10 minute warm up – 3 minute between sets.  Please start matches promptly to complete all matches.   Additional warm up time may require club members to reserve courts ½ hour prior to match start time if your club permits.

6.      Players cannot play in both mixed doubles sets. Team captain or acting captains must specify players on score sheet prior to starting sets for doubles matches, then singles matches and then designating who will be playing in the 5th and 6th mixed doubles set positions.   It is not necessary to complete entire sheet in advance to match play, only prior to sets beginning.

7.      RAINOUT/Weather In the event of rain the match will be postponed.  The captains should communicate prior to the match in case of rain out.  It is not necessary for the entire team to show up at the facility, if both captains agree prior to the match, that it cannot be played.  Every attempt should be made to play postponed matches as soon as possible.  If time allows, matches may be scheduled at the end of the season, but prior to next season starting.    In the event a match has begun but not finished due to rain, the match will be picked up at the point where it was stopped.  Players should wait around at least 30 to 60 minutes, if the home captain feels the courts will dry in a timely fashion.  Every attempt is to be made by both captains to schedule the completion of the match with the same players in attendance and playing in the same positions.  When the temperature is below 35 degrees, the match may be rescheduled.  If the wind chill drops to below 35 degrees and the temperature is above 35 degrees, both captain may agree to reschedule the match.

8.      RATINGS:       WorldTeamTennis does not require a rating but uses NTRP guidelines for self ratings. Please see new guidelines on how to determine your team rating at USTA website.

9.      MATCH TIME is 6:00 p.m on Thursdays.  Fifteen (15) minute default rule applies.

EXCEPTION:  Some clubs may require a later start time.  It is the home captains responsibility to notify the opposing captain. Please be cooperative.

MATCH PLAY TO BE CONTINUOUS-There are three minutes in between the doubles and singles sets.  In some cases the mixed doubles set may not be able to start if one of the single players is still in play in the singles set and is going to play in either mixed doubles set.  Matches that are not complete at the time the host club is ready to close or lights go out may be considered complete at that point if both captains agree  (record score at the completion of the last game).

10.     WORLD TEAMTENNIS PLAYERS Adult League for the Mobile Area, the minimum age is 18 to participate.   The player must turn 18 during the calendar year of the season to be played, however the player must be 18 or older to participate in a National Qualifier.  A player can only be on one team roster per level, per season (in the case of a weekend tournament).   A player may be listed on a different team at another level in the same season.  Players can be added to a team roster up until the last regular season match at a charge of $15.  The League Directors must approve this addition.  Players cannot be added to a roster after regular season play.  A player must have played two times in the regular season to be eligible for the National Qualifiers.

11.        SUBSTITUTIONS:  A team can at any point, INCLUDING THE SUPERTIEBREAKER, substitute a player (same gender) into a set for any reason.  Once a player is replaced, he/she cannot return in that set and players cannot play in both mixed doubles.  If a substitution occurs in doubles, the remaining player cannot change the side on which he/she receives or the service order.  Substitutions are allowed in overtime if a player has not already played in mixed doubles.  The Supertiebreaker should be treated as a new set, and all substitutions are allowed.

12.    Forfeiting Games:  If a team is one person short, they need only forfeit those sets requiring two people. In the mixed doubles they must forfeit the non-designated team (court 5).  If a person arrives late (after default time) the team only has to forfeit those matches that they could not start on time, or, if both captains agree, singles matches can be played first.  If either team forfeits the mens or womens doubles, the men’s or women’s singles set is not required to start until the completion of the other doubles set.

13.    DISPUTES:  If a team considers a player on the opposing team to be playing at the wrong level, that team captain, (or acting captain), must first notify the other team captain, (or acting captain), they are playing under protest after the first set that the player in question has played. After the match, the team making the protest must notify the League Director.  The League Director will access and review the player in question to make determination of status.

14.    Winning teams advance to the WTT National Qualifiers for up to one year from the ending date of your league.   For every four (4) teams in any (WTT local league division, one (1) team will be eligible to participate in a NQ.   A player must be on the original team roster, unless added during the season as approved by the League Directors,  and must have played two times in the regular season to be eligible. Information is available at WTT.com for National Qualifiers and National Tournament.

15.    World TeamTennis is a fun and social yet a competitive co-ed league.  It provides scheduled matches for players of all levels and promotes friendship among players and clubs/facilities.

EXPLANATION OF TIEBREAKERS:

Nine-Point Tiebreaker
A nine-point tiebreaker will be played at seven games all in any set.  The person who is to serve next begins the tiebreaker.  Each player serves two points in succession starting from the deuce court.  Players change sides after four points.  The first team (or person) to score five points wins the tiebreaker.  If the tiebreaker reaches 4-4, the person who served the eighth point serves the ninth (final) point.  The receiver, however, has the choice of sides (except in mixed doubles, where the service must be gender-to-gender).  The winner of the ninth point is the winner of the set.  This counts as one game.  Note: You do not have to win by two points.

Supertiebreaker
If the match enters into a Supertiebreaker, a coin toss will decide which team serves first/receives or chooses side in the Supertiebreaker.  The Supertiebreaker should be treated as a new set and different players  and substitutions are allowed.  Either player on the serving team may serve first.  The receiving team selects from which end of the court they want to receive.  In addition, court positions may be changed (i.e. the person who played fore hand position may switch with his/her partner to play the backhand position).  Each player serves two points in succession starting from the deuce court.  Players change sides after six points.  The first team to score seven points wins the Supertiebreaker.  If the Supertiebreaker reaches 6-6, the person who served the 12th point will serve the 13th (final) point.  Since this set is mixed doubles, the final serve will be gender-to-gender.  The winner of the 13th point wins the Supertiebreaker and the match.  Note: You do not have to win by two points.  The Supertiebreaker counts as one game in overall match scoring.

 Breaking Ties for League Winner
League standings will be determined on the basis of the won-loss record of completed matches.  If there is a tie in the final standings on the basis of the foregoing, the tie will be broken in favor of the team with the most direct wins over the tieing team.  The best winning percentage (total games won divided by total games played) between the teams with tied match records will break the next tie.  If a tie still exists, the team which has won the most total games in all of their matches during the regular season will be given precedence.  If a tie still exists, it will be broken by the team who has lost the least total games in the regular season.  Should a tie still exist, it will be broken in favor of the team which has scored the most games over the other during the regular season.  If a tie still exists, there will be a coin toss, unless there is a chance both teams could play a Supertiebreaker
.
